Supporters of the schismatic ‘OCU’ captured on April 2, 2023 the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s Cathedral of the Intercession in the city of Khmelnitskiy. The pretext found by the radicals to begin storming the church was a provocation carried out in the morning during the Sunday Liturgy: according to the UOC Information-Education Department: a man disguised in a military uniform attacked a cleric of the cathedral, disrupted the service, poured water on the Gospel and damaged it in the presence of over one hundred parishioners.

Later, a crowd of radically mooded persons tries to storm the church. The clergy were led out of the parish territory, while the assaulters held a meeting to vote for the transfer of the cathedral to the jurisdiction of the ‘OCU’. The bunch of keys was conveyed to a ‘commission’ and its members entered the church and made an inventory of the property, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Ukrainian mass media.

During a regular session held on April 5 by the Khmelnitskiy City Council, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was deprived of the right to the land on which her churches are built, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reports. The canonical Church was deprived of both the land on which the captured cathedral stands and the plots on which stand the Church of the Transfiguration, the Churches of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the Great Martyr Panteleimon, the Great Martyr Paraskeva. Deprived of their property right to the land are also the administration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Diocese of Khmelnitskiy, the Church of St. George, the Monastery of John the Baptist and the Church of the Holy Trinity.
